Lee, an 18-year-old from Little Canada, Minn., is believed to be the first Hmong-American on an Olympic gymnastics team. She had established herself in 2019 as the second-best all-around gymnast in the United States behind Biles—before the Games’ postponement cast doubt on all her hopes. Then she fought her way back all the way to the top of the Olympic podium, through a series of unthinkable events.

The Hmong people (RPAHmoobNyiakeng Puachue: Pahawh Hmong: Hmong pronunciation: [m̥ɔ̃́]) are an ethnic group living mainly in southern China (GuizhouYunnanSichuanChongqing and Guangxi), VietnamLaosThailand, and Myanmar. They have been members of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) since 2007.[9] In China they are classified as a subgroup of the Miao people.

During the First and the Second Indochina Wars, France and the United States recruited thousands of Hmong people in Laos to fight against forces from North and South Vietnam and the communist Pathet Lao insurgents. The CIA operation is known as the Secret War.[10]
